Athletic Game Safety Policies

The safety and well-being of our students, staff and families is a top priority for Asheville City Schools. In partnership with the Asheville Police Department, we have updated our safety protocols. These measures are designed to create a secure environment for attendees while maintaining a positive and enjoyable experience for all.

Bag Policy and Security Screening: Anyone attending larger events such will be subject to
electronic security screening. If the individual has an implanted medical device, they will be
subject to a pat down search prior to entry. The electronic security screening system is a
walk-through weapons detection system similar to what guests at theme parks or concert
venues. Any bags larger than 6 by 4 inches will not be permitted within event venues for all
attendees. All bags are subject to inspection. Size exceptions will be made for individuals with
medical conditions and those accompanied by young children.

Minors and Adult Supervision: For the safety and well-being of all attendees, students in
grades 8 or lower must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) while attending events that are not at their home school.

Prohibited Items: The safety of attendees remains paramount, and as such, certain items
deemed dangerous by security personnel are strictly prohibited. These include weapons,
knives, firearms, pyrotechnics, and outside food or drink unless explicitly permitted by event
organizers.

Compliance and Emergency Response: Individuals threatening the safety or enjoyment of the event will be promptly escorted from the venue by law enforcement or school personnel. Failure to comply with security checks or event regulations will result in denied entry or removal. Attendees are urged to follow the guidance of event staff, law enforcement, or designated personnel in case of emergencies.

Reporting Suspicious Activity: The collective vigilance of attendees is crucial. Anyone
noticing suspicious activity or individuals is encouraged to promptly inform event staff or security personnel.
Pets: Pets are not permitted at school-wide events or on school property. Individuals with
service animals are permitted following ADA guidelines. A service animal must be under the
control of its handler. Under the ADA, service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless the individual’s disability prevents using these devices or these devices interfere with the service animal’s safe, effective performance of tasks. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls.
